About Us
Cobblestones offers a unique blend of core and elective courses which are designed to enhance each participating student's home school experience, not replace it. All classes include Biblical principles to teach children to Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. (Mark 12:30)
Classes are scheduled September through May and meet at 3308 Pleasants Road, Powhatan, VA 23139. Classes meet once or twice a week for direct instruction and group activiites. Instructors assign homework to be completed during the week. All the planning is done for you. Classes offer the benefits and flexibility of multi-age classroom style learning. Students are taught in small group settings, with lots of hands-on learning and individual attention from caring teachers.
James River Home School Foundation is a nonprofit (501c3) Christian organization established in 2009 to provide educational and extra-curricular enrichment opportunities for Virginia home-schooled students. Cobblestones is not a school, nor are we accredited by any state or national educational agency. Please note that our instructors do not have specific training for teaching students with learning disabilities or certifications for administering medical care.

Membership and Class Registration
So....How do I become a member and register for classes?
If you have checked out the list of classes offered (you can click the class to see all the class details, including the cost); then you can check out our Instructors here. If you are sure you want to enroll in one or more classes, you need to join our Cobblestones Community. Family Membership Applications for the 2025-2026 school year are now open.
Membership in this site is private for families currently attending or registering for Cobblestones classes. There is a one time *non-refundable membership fee of $70.00 per FAMILY per year, payable online to the James River Home School Foundation (JRHSF). Online payment is required with this application. In addition there is a required student registration fee of $30 per student for the first 3 students. There is no additional registration fee for 4 or more students.
As this is a closed community, class registration can only take place after your membership to this group has been approved and membership fees are paid. Once you are logged into the secure site as a member you can sign-up for classes. All membership and student registration fees must be received prior signing up to a classs.
Membership fees are non-refundable UNLESS:
- the class you enrolled in is cancelled
- your application for membership is not approved.
Parents must be in compliance with the homeschool laws for the State of Virginia.
Please see our "FAQs" about membership, class registration, and other related questions.
You may also contact our Academy Director at [email protected].

Where do classes meet?
Powhatan Christian Fellowship

Powhatan, VA 23139
What qualifications do your instructors hold?
Our instructors come from a wide variety of backgrounds with numerous talents. They share a love for Christ and a commitment to teach Biblical principles in all subject areas. Most are either currently homeschooling or have adult children who were homeschooled. Look for information about indivdual qualifications on the Class Instructors page. All adults who work directly with students have passed a background check. Please note that our instructors do not have specific training for teaching students with learning disabilities or certifications for administering medical care.
When are you in session?
Courses will run September – May.
Check the website calendar for details and holidays.
How much does it cost to be a member?
There is a one time *non-refundable membership fee of $70 per FAMILY per year, payable online to the James River Home School Foundation (JRHSF). Online payment is required with this application. In addition there is a required student registration fee of $30 per student for the first 3 students. There is no additional registration fee for 4 or more students. Registration usually begins in March and ends in September.
*Membership fees are non-refundable UNLESS:
- the class you enrolled in is cancelled
- you are denied membership for any reason
What do classes cost?
Class prices vary and are paid directly to the teachers and can be found under Class Descriptions. You can then click the class you're interested in to see all the class details.
What is your policy for extreme weather days?
In the event of inclement weather (snow, ice, hurricane), we will make an announcement of cancellation and/or delayed opening, early dismissal, etc. before 7 A.M if possible. A SMS text and forum post will be sent out. We will also post on the Cobblestones FB Group. Since we have teachers/students coming from several counties, we feel we should make our decision based on weather in the western/rural areas, not just in the local Richmond area. If Powhatan County schools close, we will also close.
